Figure Drawing 0003: Costuming

Back to figure drawings for a bit.

This was a really fun piece to work on, because of the clothing aspects that are typically avoided in studio figure drawings. It has always been difficult for me to come up with interesting clothing for my characters to wear, but that is where reference becomes so important. Humans have come up with such a huge variety of costumes throughout the ages that you are guaranteed to see the differences that each culture brings to the idea of clothing.

Another driving aspect of clothing is its utility. "Does this piece of clothing help or hinder me in achieving my objectives?" We may not always ask ourselves consciously, but we make decisions based on this all the time.

In the end, this is another area of drawing that I hope to improve in. I want my characters' clothing to emphasize their defining attributes, it should be indicative of the tastes and preferences. In short, a character's clothing should say something about that character to the audience.
